Mr Etienne Caruana

NSO Director General

Mr Etienne Caruana is the Director General (DG) of the National Statistics Office (NSO) a position which he has held since May 2019. Mr Caruana started his career inside NSO as a statistician, in 2005 he was appointed Manager responsible for Social statistics, a domain that encompassed demography, education, culture and national surveys such as the Statistics on Income and Living Conditions and the Household Budgetary Survey.

In 2009 he was appointed Director for Social Statistics with responsibilities for labour market, tourism, demography, migration, education, and cross-sectional regional statistics. Mr Caruana also had responsibility for the Economic Statistics Directorate. In January 2018 he was appointed acting Director General of the NSO, a position which he held for over a year and a half, until he was officially appointed DG in May 2019.

Mr Caruana has worked tirelessly to build a wide support network for NSO, one which includes the esteem of other national statistics institutes as well as entities such as the European Commission, the International Monetary Fund and the United Nations. For many years he has been a member of the European Directors of Social Statistics working group and has worked with Eurostat on sectoral reviews and providing technical assistance to Non-EU countries. Mr Caruana also represented NSO in the European Statistical Systems Committee, the highest decision-making body on statistical matters in the European Commission. On a national level he also gave his professional contribution to the Pensions Strategy Working Group among other things.
